I am Jada. And this is the kitchen I was taught in.

There were four women in that kitchen and not one of them wrote anything down. They did not need to. My grandmother could tell by the smell of the pot whether it had gone long enough, and she was never once wrong about it.
What she could not do was explain it. Ask her why and she would say because that is how it is done, and that was the end of the lesson.
So I started writing. Not to improve on her — you do not improve on her — but because the knowing was going to die in that kitchen otherwise, and it deserved better than that.
What I will and will not tell you

I will tell you what a plant was traditionally used for, how it was prepared, and what my elders said about who should leave it alone.
I will not tell you it cures anything. I will not tell you it replaces your doctor. And I will not sell you a bottle and call it a miracle, because I have watched people do that and I did not like what it did to them.
If that is too plain for you, there are louder shops than mine.
